Three paramilitary personnel were killed and at least five people wounded on Monday(November 24) after three suicide bombers targeted the headquarters of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) in Peshawar, according to AFP.
The attack unfolded as the militants opened fire while forcing their way into the complex, the headquarters of the paramilitary force in the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Police confirmed that the attackers subsequently detonated their explosives inside the facility.
Javed Iqbal, the deputy commandant of the force, confirmed the deaths of three paramilitary personnel.
A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the sequence of events, stating, “The first suicide bomber carried out an attack on the main entrance of the constabulary and the others entered the compound.”
Following the initial attack, the area was immediately sealed off by security forces. “Law enforcement personnel, including the army and police, have cordoned off the area and are carefully handling the situation as we suspect there are some terrorists inside the headquarters,” the official added.
The FC headquarters is situated in a densely populated area of Peshawar. Safdar Khan, a resident, noted the immediate security response, saying, “The road has been closed for traffic and cordoned off by the army, police and (security) personnel.”
The five wounded, including two paramilitary personnel, were transported to Lady Reading Hospital, according to hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim.
No militant group has immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. The attack comes amid a recent surge in violence by Islamist militants operating in the region, which has escalated following last month’s deadly border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Islamabad frequently accuses the Afghan Taliban of harboring the militants responsible for launching cross-border attacks, a charge Kabul consistently denies.
