Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday announced that Bangladesh's next general election will be held in February 2026, ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
In a televised address to the nation marking Student-People Uprising Day, Dr Yunus said the interim government is preparing to fulfill its final and most important responsibility transitioning the country back to an elected government.
“Now it is time for us to fulfil our final duty: holding the election,” he said. “With this address, we enter the final chapter of our responsibility. We will begin the process of handing over power to a government elected by the people.”
He confirmed that, on behalf of the interim administration, a formal letter would be sent to the Chief Election Commissioner, requesting that the Election Commission arrange the national polls in February 2026, before the anticipated start of Ramadan on the evening of February 17.
Dr Yunus called upon the nation to pray for a peaceful and successful election. “We will provide all necessary support to ensure that the election is fair, peaceful and festive,” he said, pledging full cooperation from the government to maintain an atmosphere of stability and inclusivity.
He also said preparations both institutional and mental would begin immediately to ensure the election becomes a historic moment for the country.
“We want this election to be remembered for its peace, voter participation, and the spirit of unity it brings to our nation,” the chief adviser added.
