Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has emphasized that the combined talent and tireless efforts of workers and owners are the driving forces behind the advancement of key sectors in Bangladesh, including garments, agriculture, industry, construction, transportation, and technology.

In a statement marking both the Great May Day 2025 and National Occupational Health and Safety Day, Dr Yunus underscored the vital role of unity and cooperation in rebuilding the nation. “To rebuild this country, all must strengthen the atmosphere of unity, mutual respect and trust,” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of May Day, Dr Yunus expressed hope that if the current spirit of solidarity continues, the dream of a discrimination-free Bangladesh—envisioned during the July-August movement by students, workers, and the public—will soon become a reality.

This year, for the first time, the two observances—May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day—are being jointly celebrated. Dr Yunus reiterated the government’s commitment to recognizing the contributions of workers and ensuring their social protection.

“Ensuring a safe and healthy working environment is not only a right of workers, but also a prerequisite for sustainable industrial and economic development,” he said. He added that improvements in workers’ welfare and living standards will be reflected in the broader economic progress of the nation.

Dr Yunus expressed confidence that Bangladesh's journey toward progress would accelerate further through strong partnerships between workers and employers. He also wished success to all programs and initiatives being held to mark the dual observances.

May Day, to be observed tomorrow in Bangladesh and around the globe, commemorates the historic struggle of workers in Haymarket, Chicago in 1886, who laid down their lives in the fight for an eight-hour workday. The theme for this year is: "Workers and owners united; let's rebuild this country anew."

Since 1886, May Day has been a powerful symbol of the fight for workers’ rights, celebrated with dignity and resolve across the world—including in Bangladesh—as a day to champion the cause of the working class.
