At least 123 Rohingyas who were registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in India remain in Bangladesh’s overcrowded refugee camps after being pushed across the border during a three-month period beginning in May 2025, according to Bangladeshi officials.

According to New Age, Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB) has foiled at least 43 alleged push-in attempts by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at different border points in recent months, highlighting growing tensions along the frontier.

BGB headquarters data show that between May 7, 2025, and January 26, 2026, India pushed 2,344 people into Bangladesh, including 126 Indian nationals, excluding Rohingyas. The Indian nationals were later sent back to India by Bangladeshi authorities.

The Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) informed the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief in July 2025 that dozens of Rohingyas, including those registered with UNHCR in India, had entered Bangladesh through such push-ins. RRRC Commissioner Mohammed Mizanur Rahman said the refugees are still being sheltered in camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.

The RRRC also noted that the actual number of Rohingyas pushed into Bangladesh could be higher due to incomplete records. Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.3 million Rohingya refugees who fled persecution in Myanmar.

The issue has also featured in bilateral discussions. During the 57th BGB-BSF director general-level talks in New Delhi in June, BGB urged India to stop push-ins and instead follow established bilateral mechanisms for the repatriation of verified nationals, while the BSF called for faster nationality verification by Bangladesh.
