A massive combined-arms offensive by the Myanmar military junta in Kyaukphyu Township, the strategic hub of major Chinese-backed projects, has reportedly been repelled, stalling in the face of fierce and effective resistance from the Arakan Army (AA).
According to local military sources, the junta has unleashed land, sea, and air forces including advanced drones, missiles, and fighter jets in a desperate bid to reclaim territory controlled by the AA.
Despite the technological superiority, the offensive has failed to advance. "The military has experienced considerable losses on the battlefield, which is obstructing their progress," a source stated. The AA is reportedly employing a robust defense, drawing junta forces into a "killing field" and utilizing highly effective guerrilla tactics.
The junta's heavy casualties were starkly highlighted in recent clashes. On October 31, a military column of over 100 soldiers advancing toward the AA-controlled village of Thaing Chaung was reportedly "entirely demolished" by AA units positioned above Zin Chaung village.
Another unit from the 32nd Police Battalion, moving from Zin Chaung toward Thaing Chaung, was also ambushed by the Arakan Army, leading to numerous fatalities. Sources reported that after an hour of intense combat, the junta forces retreated from the Sittaw-Zin Chaung-Kyaukphyu junction, forced to abandon their dead.
"They were unable to retrieve the bodies. The junta military had to withdraw," a source familiar with the battle stated.
In what appears to be a response to these battlefield defeats, the junta has increasingly turned its firepower on civilian targets. On the night of October 30, military fighter jets conducted airstrikes on Zin Chaung Kon Bwe village, despite no active fighting in the area. The AA stated that the bombing killed six civilians, including a woman, and left nearly 20 others injured, According to Narinjara.
Local residents confirmed the junta is repeatedly failing to take Thaing Chaung and Chaung Wa, withdrawing with significant losses after each attempt. "They are additionally targeting nearby villages using drones and artillery. The planes are carrying out bombing missions," said one resident fleeing the conflict. "The individuals residing in the villages are all fleeing."
At present, the junta's ground assault appears neutralized, restricted to launching long-range attacks, while the Arakan Army maintains its defensive lines.
