The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has seized control of Infantry Battalion 141 headquarters, a key stronghold of the Myanmar junta. This facility commands authority over the Irrawaddy River route to the Kachin State capital, Myitkyina. The capture follows months of confrontations and marks a notable advancement for the KIA and its allied Kachin People’s Defense Force.
The strategic move began with the occupation of Sinbo on the west bank of the Irrawaddy in Myitkyina Township on February 10, when a police station fell into the hands of anti-regime groups. Subsequently, efforts were directed towards capturing the battalion headquarters located west of the town, deemed vital by Colonel Naw Bu, spokesperson for the KIA. He emphasized its role in regulating the route between the KIA headquarters and Brigade 8, as well as controlling the Myitkyina-Bhamo river route.
Reports from Kachin media indicate the utilization of junta Y12 airplanes and helicopters in defending the besieged battalion headquarters. The intensity of the conflict resulted in casualties, including the death of a junta battalion commander alongside several of his comrades, with another commander sustaining injuries.
This victory adds to the KIA's recent territorial gains, including the control of the Myitkyina-Bhamo road, following the seizure of multiple junta headquarters and over 60 positions along the route last month. Additionally, the KIA now commands the Momauk-Loije road and holds sway over Loije on the Chinese border.
Tensions escalated further last week with clashes erupting between the KIA and junta forces in Momauk Township, underscoring the ongoing volatility in Myanmar's conflict landscape.
