Malaysians across the country are celebrating the 68th anniversary of independence today(August 31) , with nationwide festivities that reflect both national pride and a vision for future progress.
The annual celebration, locally known as Hari Merdeka or National Day, commemorates the country’s freedom from British rule in 1957. This year’s official theme, “Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni” translated as “Malaysia Madani: People cared for” highlights the central role of citizens in driving the nation’s sustainable development and inclusive growth.
The main celebrations are being held at Dataran Putrajaya, featuring a grand parade, cultural performances, and public gatherings. Across the country, Malaysians are marking the occasion with fireworks displays, concerts, competitions, and the traditional display of the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, on homes, offices, and vehicles.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a special address ahead of the holiday, called for deeper unity and patriotism, emphasizing that national progress must be anchored in solidarity and people-centered policies.
Adding to this year’s festivities, the government is supporting RIUH Merdeka, a 30-hour nonstop celebration in Putrajaya showcasing arts, culture, food, and music, with more than 80 local vendors and creative enterprises. The event not only celebrates Malaysia’s cultural diversity but also fosters opportunities for entrepreneurs and strengthens community engagement.

Observers note that Malaysia’s National Day resonates beyond its borders as the country positions itself as a vital player in Southeast Asia and the wider global community. With its focus on inclusivity, digital transformation, and economic resilience, the 68th Independence Day underscores Malaysia’s aspirations to balance tradition and modernity while navigating an increasingly interconnected world.
As the Stripes of Glory, the Malaysian flag waves proudly nationwide, the day serves as both a remembrance of past sacrifices and a reaffirmation of Malaysia’s commitment to unity, peace, and progress in the decades ahead.
