Myanmar's military junta has issued a rare appeal for international assistance in the wake of Typhoon Yagi, which has caused severe flooding across the country. So far, India is the only nation to respond, sending a substantial aid package that arrived at Naypyitaw International Airport on the evening of September 17.
The aid includes 1,000 mosquito nets, 3,000 ready-to-eat food items, 500 kitchen kits, 1,000 solar lamps, two generators, disinfectant fluids, bleaching powder, and various medical supplies, totaling over 30 tons.
Since September 11, heavy rainfall and flash floods have impacted nearly 60 townships across nine regions and states, including Naypyitaw, Bago, Kayah, Karen, Magway, Mandalay, Mon, and eastern and southern Shan State, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). The agency reported that more than 600,000 people have been affected, with many reported missing and hundreds confirmed dead.
The junta has stated that 226 individuals have died and 77 are still missing due to the flooding.
It should be noted that this military junta is accused of killing ordinary people of Myanmar, including the Rohingya genocide. Several countries have made serious complaints against the ruler but India has not heeded it. India relies on Myanmar's junta as part of regional diplomacy and to maintain dominance in the country.
