Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman yesterday sought stronger support from member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to help resolve the protracted Rohingya crisis.
The appeal came during a courtesy meeting between the Prime Minister and ambassadors and high commissioners of OIC member countries stationed in Dhaka at the Cabinet Division office at the Bangladesh Secretariat this afternoon.
According to BSS, Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony said the OIC envoys congratulated Tarique Rahman on assuming office as Prime Minister and reaffirmed their commitment to standing beside Bangladesh on key regional and global issues.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister thanked OIC member states for their continued support and emphasized the need for greater international cooperation in addressing the Rohingya issue, which continues to place significant humanitarian and economic pressure on Bangladesh.
The OIC member countries also expressed interest in deepening bilateral cooperation with Bangladesh in areas including investment, trade, education, healthcare, textiles and the pharmaceutical sector.
Tarique Rahman recalled the longstanding brotherly relations Bangladesh has maintained with OIC countries since the tenure of Ziaur Rahman and expressed optimism that these ties would grow stronger in the coming years.
Envoys from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Palestine, Algeria, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates attended the meeting. Heads of mission from Iran, Iraq and Libya were also present.
