The government has taken a major step toward expanding digital education in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, signing three separate agreements to install Starlink satellite internet in primary and secondary schools across Khagrachhari, Bandarban and Rangamati.
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) inked the deals with the three Hill District Councils between 11 and 27 November. Following the agreements, installation of Starlink devices has already begun, with officials targeting high-speed connectivity in most schools by December.
For decades, remote hill communities have remained outside reliable broadband networks due to rugged terrain, poor infrastructure, and electricity challenges. The new satellite-based system is expected to deliver uninterrupted, high-speed internet for the first time, enabling online classes, virtual labs and multimedia learning.
BSCL Managing Director Dr Muhammad Imadur Rahman said the initiative opens “a new horizon” for education in the hills and aligns with the government’s vision of building a Smart Bangladesh. Officials believe the project will significantly reduce the digital divide and enhance the learning capacity and competitiveness of students in remote areas.
