Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has placed the Bangladesh–Myanmar border on maximum alert amid ongoing clashes between anti-junta rebel groups and armed factions inside Myanmar. As part of this heightened security, BGB and other law enforcement agencies detained 52 individuals on Sunday (January 11) while they were attempting to illegally enter Bangladesh through the Hwaikyang border area of Teknaf.
According to BGB and local sources, the detainees are believed to be members of a Rohingya armed group from Myanmar. Intense gunfire reportedly broke out across the border from early morning until noon, prompting the group to try to cross into Bangladesh out of fear for their lives. However, due to the alert stance of BGB personnel deployed along the border, the infiltrators were intercepted immediately after crossing and surrounded by the joint forces.

Cox’s Bazar Sector Commander of BGB, Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, said the detainees were unarmed at the time of arrest. He stated that upon receiving information about the infiltration attempt, a coordinated operation involving BGB, RAB, the Army, Navy, and Police was launched, leading to their detention. The individuals are currently in police custody, and further action will be taken following legal procedures.
Sources said that no weapons were recovered during the preliminary search of the detainees.
BGB officials also confirmed that border patrols have been intensified to prevent any armed group from exploiting the instability across the border to enter Bangladesh and create unrest. The authorities have issued a strict warning that no form of illegal infiltration will be tolerated.
Stray Bullet Injures Bangladeshi Child
Meanwhile, a seven-year-old girl named Afnan, daughter of Jasim Uddin, was injured by a stray bullet that crossed the border and struck her in the Techchibreeze area of Hwaikyang on Sunday morning. Rumors of the child’s death initially spread, triggering tension among local residents. However, law enforcement agencies quickly intervened and brought the situation under control.
Police later confirmed that the child is alive and has been referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Although a tense atmosphere prevails in the Hwaikyang border area, residents say a sense of relief has returned due to the strict security measures taken by BGB. Authorities are continuing detailed interrogation and investigations to determine the identities and intentions of the detained infiltrators.
