Maldives has received a shipment of Bayraktar TB2 combat drones from Turkey. This move comes amidst escalating tensions between the island nation and India, signaling a potential shift in alliances and strategic partnerships in the region.

The agreement between the Maldives and Turkey entails the supply of a command control station and six TB2 unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) to bolster the security requirements of the Maldivian armed forces. The delivery follows Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Turkey in November 2023, during which he engaged in discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and explored collaborations with Turkish defense industry companies.

Traditionally maintaining close ties with India, the Maldives has been undergoing a significant diplomatic realignment since President Muizzu assumed power in October. Expressing concerns about the presence of Indian troops in the Maldives, President Muizzu has urged New Delhi to withdraw its nearly 80 military personnel stationed in the country.

The acquisition of Bayraktar TB2 drones by the Maldives signifies a strategic shift in defense procurement and underscores Turkey’s emergence as a major global supplier in the defense industry. Developed by Baykar, these drones have played pivotal roles in conflicts across multiple countries, including Azerbaijan, Libya, and Ukraine, where they proved instrumental in countering Russian forces.

The Bayraktar TB2 boasts impressive capabilities, including an exceptional endurance of over 20 hours at an altitude of 27,000 feet, making it ideal for long-range missions. With a payload capacity of up to 120 kilograms (265 pounds), it can effectively carry various types of equipment or ordnance. Its versatility shines through its ability to neutralize advanced anti-aircraft systems, artillery, and armored vehicles, making it a formidable asset in a range of combat scenarios.

Baykar reported exports worth a record $1.76 billion in 2023, accounting for over 30% of Turkish defense companies’ total sales. The Bayraktar TB2 has been sold to 33 countries, including NATO and EU member states. Additionally, Baykar has signed agreements with nine countries for its larger and more advanced drone, the Akıncı UCAV.
