An Army officer, Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar Nirjan of the 39 ST Battalion, was killed in an attack by robbers during a joint forces operation in the Dulahajra area of Chakaria upazila, Cox's Bazar, on Monday night, as confirmed by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The operation was launched based on intelligence reports indicating that a group of armed robbers was hiding in the area. A team of joint forces, including 39 ST BN members, was deployed around midnight to apprehend the suspects. The team, led by Major Ujjwal, included Lieutenant Tanzim, two Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), and 24 other soldiers.
According to sources, the joint forces surrounded a house where the suspects were believed to be hiding at around 12:30 a.m. The armed group, sensing the presence of security forces, attempted to flee. During the operation, Lieutenant Tanzim confronted two terrorists. They opened fire, and in the ensuing struggle, the officer was attacked and fatally wounded by a knife to his neck.
Lieutenant Tanzim was immediately evacuated and taken to Chakaria Christian Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Ramu, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff at 4:50 a.m.
The Chakaria circle’s Additional Superintendent of Police reported that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, and they are currently being interrogated.
