Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have discussed efforts to find a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, along with the growing impacts of climate change.

The meeting was held on Thursday at the UN Secretariat Building in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to BSS, the two leaders also discussed Bangladesh-UN cooperation, Bangladesh’s development journey, and a range of global and regional issues.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of continued UN cooperation and support on issues related to Bangladesh’s priorities and national interests.

The Rohingya crisis remains a major regional humanitarian concern, with Bangladesh continuing to host more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees who fled violence and persecution in Myanmar.

The discussions also covered Bangladesh’s contribution to the UN’s peace, security and development efforts, reflecting Dhaka’s continued engagement with the international organisation on regional and global challenges.

Both sides expressed their commitment to maintaining close cooperation and working together to address common challenges, including the humanitarian crisis involving the Rohingya population and the adverse effects of climate change.
