The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has officially sought clarification from the United Nations regarding a report published by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) that contains inaccuracies about the movement of displaced individuals from Myanmar. Bangladesh has urged the UNHCR to provide an explanation on the basis of which the report was prepared and expects the agency to release a corrected version.

The Ministry conveyed its concerns to UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka, Gwyn Lewis, during a formal meeting on Monday, according to MoFA sources.

The disputed report, released on January 7 by the UNHCR's Myanmar office, stated that between February 2021 and December 2024, approximately 71,300 people displaced from Myanmar sought refuge in India, specifically in the states of Manipur and Mizoram. The report claimed that no displaced individuals from Myanmar entered Bangladesh during this period.

Bangladesh has strongly refuted this claim, emphasizing the presence of thousands of Rohingya refugees who have sought shelter in the country over the years. Dhaka views the report as not only factually incorrect but also potentially misleading regarding the humanitarian challenges faced by Bangladesh in managing displaced populations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its dissatisfaction with the report and reiterated its commitment to ensuring accurate representation of the realities on the ground.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Bangladesh's Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Mushfiqul Fazal, emphasized the potential for bolstering bilateral trade ties between Bangladesh and Mexico. His vision includes exploring new avenues of economic cooperation to strengthen mutual relations.

Bangladesh continues to advocate for international support and collaboration in addressing regional humanitarian issues while safeguarding its national interests.
