US-based global energy company Chevron has expressed interest in increasing its investment in Bangladesh’s energy sector, including exploring new gas fields and expanding operations in existing fields, as the country seeks to strengthen energy security and meet rising demand.
A high-level Chevron delegation led by Javier La Rosa, President of Base Assets and Emerging Countries (BAEC), conveyed the company’s interest during a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The discussions focused on Chevron’s existing investments in Bangladesh’s energy sector, with particular attention to increasing investment in ageing gas fields and identifying opportunities for exploration in new fields.
According to BSS, Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Shadhin said the meeting also covered ways to strengthen Bangladesh’s energy security through greater investment in domestic gas exploration and production.
Chevron’s interest comes as Bangladesh faces growing pressure to secure reliable energy supplies for households, industries and power generation. Expanding domestic gas production could help reduce dependence on imported energy and support the country’s broader economic and industrial ambitions.
The US energy giant has been operating in Bangladesh’s upstream gas sector for decades and has significant interests in several major gas-producing assets. Any expansion of investment into new exploration areas could potentially increase domestic gas supplies and contribute to longer-term energy security.
Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit, Chevron Bangladesh President and Managing Director Shu Xiong and senior government and company officials attended the meeting.
The latest discussions signal renewed interest in strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and Chevron at a time when Dhaka is seeking additional investment in the energy sector to address supply constraints and support sustained economic growth.
