Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan commenced his three-nation Asia tour on Monday( February 10), starting with Malaysia, where he was warmly welcomed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Turkish delegation at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Erdoğan participated in the "Türkiye-Malaysia Strategic Cooperation in the New Century" meeting at Putrajaya International Convention Center, where he emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Asian countries. Praising Malaysia as a leading nation in its region, he expressed confidence in strengthening bilateral relations across various sectors.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations
During his speech, Erdoğan highlighted the long-standing historical and cultural ties between the two countries, dating back to the 16th century. He marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations and reaffirmed his belief in further collaboration. "We are exerting efforts to build new partnerships and enrich our network of cooperation. In 2019, we declared our Asia Anew vision to strengthen ties with the continent," he stated.
Malaysia, a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), collaborates closely with Türkiye on diplomatic and humanitarian fronts. Both nations have joined the Gaza Contact Group to seek diplomatic resolutions to the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Palestinian enclave.

Defense and Economic Cooperation

Malaysia maintains strong ties with Türkiye in the defense industry, with notable agreements such as the purchase of three Turkish corvette warships by the Malaysian Navy, set for delivery within three-and-a-half years. The vessels, produced by leading Turkish defense company STM, will enhance Malaysia’s maritime defense capabilities.
Erdoğan also cited the successful partnership between Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and Malaysia, which provides employment for over 100 young Malaysian engineers. He noted that collaboration in the defense sector has also expanded to uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), specifically Ankas.
On the economic front, bilateral trade volume exceeded $5 billion in 2024, aligning with both nations' predetermined goals. Erdoğan expressed hopes of increasing trade volume to $10 billion in a balanced manner, with cooperation expanding into sectors such as semiconductor technologies, automotive, aerospace, and civilian-use simulators.

Cultural and Diplomatic Engagements

Erdoğan emphasized the significance of cultural and educational collaboration, highlighting Malaysia's hosting of the region’s largest Turkish Culture Center under the Yunus Emre Institute. Additionally, the Maarif Foundation of Türkiye is working to establish a school in Malaysia.
Malaysia, an integral member of ASEAN and the upcoming 2025 chair, has maintained strong ties with Türkiye since the signing of a free trade agreement in 2014, the first between an ASEAN member and Türkiye. Both nations also cooperate through the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation.

Anwar Ibrahim’s Praise for Erdoğan

Speaking at the event, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lauded Erdoğan’s leadership in elevating Türkiye’s global standing. "Few statesmen have more resolve than Erdoğan. He led Türkiye's extraordinary transformation in over two decades and always had clear goals," Ibrahim stated.
He also commended Erdoğan for his unwavering stance on Gaza, noting his bravery in addressing humanitarian crises. "President Erdoğan understands that history does not look kindly upon the meek; it favors the brave," he added.
Expressing personal gratitude, Ibrahim recalled the support extended by Erdoğan and First Lady Emine Erdoğan during his difficult times. "At a time when international actors turned their back on me, you supported me, and I am grateful for that," said Ibrahim, who was imprisoned for years on politically motivated charges before his 2022 election victory.

As both nations continue to build on their strategic partnership, Erdoğan reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing ties with Malaysia in various sectors. "Malaysia always has an exceptional place in our vision. We will soon reap the fruits of our cooperation," he concluded.
The visit marks a significant step in reinforcing Türkiye-Malaysia relations, with promising advancements in trade, defense, and cultural exchanges in the years ahead.
