The European Union (EU) has launched its first-ever Twinning Project in Bangladesh, a €2 million initiative designed to enhance the efficiency, independence, and transparency of the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (OCAG).

The three-year project was formally inaugurated in Dhaka Sunday(September 1) by Bangladesh Comptroller and Auditor General Md Nurul Islam, President of Poland’s Supreme Audit Institution (NIK) Marian Banas, and EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller.

Under the partnership, Poland’s Supreme Audit Institution will work closely with OCAG to strengthen Bangladesh’s auditing capacity. A Resident Twinning Adviser from Poland has already taken office in Dhaka to lead the cooperation.

According to the EU, the project will focus on improving financial, performance, and IT audits, ensuring that public funds are managed more efficiently and transparently. It will also support OCAG in adopting international best practices in financial oversight, risk management, and digital audit tools.

“The initiative aims to build a stronger culture of transparency and accountability, which are essential for effective democratic governance,” the EU said in a statement.

The Twinning Project, a European cooperation instrument traditionally used in EU member states and neighboring countries, is being implemented in Bangladesh for the first time, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to modernize its public financial management system.
