Qatar has released eight former Indian naval officers who were previously sentenced to death on unspecified charges. The release comes after their death penalties were commuted into prison sentences of “varying” lengths. Seven of these officers have already returned to India, according to a statement from Delhi’s foreign ministry.

The eight ex-naval officers had been detained for approximately 18 months, and their arrest had made front-page headlines in India back in 2022. However, the specific charges against them were never publicly disclosed by either Qatar or India. Reports from Financial Times and Reuters suggest that the men were accused of spying for Israel while working for Dahra Global, a private firm in Qatar.

India expressed its gratitude to the Amir of the State of Qatar for enabling the release and homecoming of these nationals. The relationship between India and Qatar remained strong despite the initial shock caused by the death sentences. In fact, the two countries are close allies, with India recently signing a $78 billion deal to import liquefied natural gas from Doha until the end of 2048.

Diplomatic efforts played a crucial role in securing the release of the former naval officers. In December, India’s foreign ministry confirmed that the Court of Appeal in Qatar had commuted their death sentences. While the exact quantum of the prison terms remains undisclosed, the officers are now free and back on Indian soil.
