Chief of the Army Staff of India, General Upendra Dwivedi, has stressed the significance of harmonious relations between India and Bangladesh, asserting that any animosity between the two neighbors would not benefit either nation. Speaking at a press conference at the Army Headquarters in South Block on Monday, General Dwivedi highlighted Bangladesh's strategic importance to India and vice versa.

"I will take you back to the comment made by the Bangladesh Army Chief recently—that India is strategically important to Bangladesh, and the same is true vice versa. We are neighbors; we have to live together and understand each other. Any kind of animosity is not in each other’s interest," said General Dwivedi.

His remarks came on the heels of heightened diplomatic tensions, with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoning Bangladesh's Deputy High Commissioner, Nurul Islam, over concerns about border fencing activities. The move followed Dhaka's summoning of India’s top diplomat to address similar concerns.

Despite these developments, General Dwivedi assured that the border situation remains stable. "As of today, there is no vulnerability from any side. I was in touch with the Chief of Bangladesh even when this changeover took place. In November, we had a video conference also," he said.

Strengthening Military Cooperation
General Dwivedi also underscored the robust military relationship between the two countries, which he described as "well and perfect." He noted ongoing initiatives such as Indian officers attending Bangladesh’s National Defence College (NDC).
However, he acknowledged that joint military exercises have been temporarily postponed due to the current situation. "As the situation improves, these exercises will resume," he assured.

Strained Relations Amid Political Turmoil
India-Bangladesh relations have faced challenges in recent months. The diplomatic strain has been exacerbated by the political crisis in Dhaka, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in New Delhi on August 5 following a student-led protest against her administration's alleged authoritarian practices.
While the Indian Army Chief maintained optimism about military and diplomatic cooperation, the recent border disagreements underscore the need for continued dialogue to resolve issues amicably.

The statement by General Dwivedi is seen as a call for renewed focus on maintaining peace and cooperation between the two nations in the face of evolving challenges.
