India’s northeastern state of Manipur has set a target of completing fencing along its Myanmar border by 2028, as New Delhi moves to tighten security along the troubled frontier.

About 55 kilometers of the 398-kilometer Manipur-Myanmar border have been fenced so far, with construction facing delays because of difficult terrain and logistical challenges, according to state officials. 

According to Nikkei Asia, the fencing is part of India’s wider effort to secure its porous Myanmar frontier amid concerns over cross-border movement, insurgency and smuggling.

The project is particularly significant around Moreh, a key border trade point linking India with Myanmar. Officials said work is continuing on the remaining sections, including areas where border demarcation is yet to be completed. 

The move could further reshape movement and trade across India’s northeastern frontier, where communities on both sides maintain longstanding ethnic and social ties.
