Nepal witnessed escalating unrest on Monday (September 8) as youth-led protests turned violent in Kathmandu’s New Baneshwor area, resulting in at least one fatality.

Protesters clashed with police after breaking through barricades and entering the parliamentary premises. Authorities responded with water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Civil Hospital Executive Director Mohan Chandra Regmi confirmed that one person was killed in the police firing. The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed. Several other protesters were injured and are receiving treatment at Civil Hospital, Everest Hospital, and nearby medical facilities.

Reports indicate that the demonstrations were triggered by widespread public anger over government corruption and the recent decision to ban 26 unregistered social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Snapchat. Protesters hurled tree branches and water bottles at law enforcement while chanting anti-corruption slogans.

In response to the unrest, the Kathmandu District Administration imposed a curfew in New Baneshwor and surrounding areas from 12:30 PM to 10:00 PM local time. District Administrator Shabilal Rijal invoked Section 6 of the Local Administration Act to enforce the measure.

The curfew zone covers the following areas: from New Baneshwor Chowk westward to Everest Hotel and Bijuli Bazaar Arch Bridge; eastward to Min Bhawan and Shantinagar up to Tinkune Chowk; northward from iPlex Mall to Ratna Rajya Secondary School; and southward from Shantinagar to Shankhamul Bridge.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts are underway to restore order in the capital.
