Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday(September 9)  following days of escalating protests that have plunged the Himalayan nation into turmoil. His aide, Prakash Silwal, confirmed the resignation, Reuters reported.

The move came just hours after anti-corruption demonstrators, largely driven by Gen Z activists, defied an indefinite curfew and set fire to Oli’s private residences inside a compound in Balkot, Bhaktapur. According to The Kathmandu Post, protesters had gathered outside the residence in the morning, clashing with security forces before breaching the compound and torching two houses despite heavy police presence.

The unrest follows a violent crackdown a day earlier when security personnel opened fire on demonstrators, leaving 19 people dead and more than 400 injured. The bloodshed has further fueled the movement, which accuses Oli’s government of corruption and nepotism.

Adding to the political crisis, two cabinet ministers submitted their resignations earlier in the day, further weakening the embattled administration.

Authorities have warned of continued violence as demonstrators vow to sustain their campaign despite curfew orders and heightened security measures across the Kathmandu Valley.
