A Rohingya man was detained on Sunday in Sadullapur upazila while attempting to register as a voter, the Election Commission (EC) confirmed in a press release issued on Monday.
The detainee, identified as Nurul Amin, visited the Sadullapur Upazila Election Office with recommendations from two Bangladeshi individuals, Tayeb Sarkar and Jibon Kresh Dipan Ujjal, to enlist himself as a voter.
Election office staff grew suspicious when Nurul failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding his identity and address during questioning. The inconsistencies prompted the office to alert local police.
Upon investigation, law enforcement confirmed that Nurul Amin was not a Bangladeshi citizen but a member of the Rohingya community.
The Sadullapur Upazila Election Officer subsequently filed a case and handed the detainee over to police custody. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to preventing illegal voter registrations, especially involving Rohingyas.
