A widely circulated statement on social media claiming that Balochistan has declared itself an independent country has drawn significant attention, although there has been no official confirmation from Pakistani authorities or independent international sources.

The statement, issued in the name of the "Republic of Balochistan," alleges that the region has formally declared independence from Pakistan and that the "Balochistan Army" has taken control of around 85 percent of the territory. It further claims that a new administration has adopted a national flag, national anthem, currency and governance system."The world should recognise our independence and sovereignty," Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. He also called on India to formally recognise Balochistan as an independent state and permit the establishment of a Baloch embassy in the country.

According to the unverified statement, the new authorities have assumed control over Balochistan's natural resources, including gas fields, coal mines and mineral reserves. It also alleges that a number of personnel from Pakistan's security forces have resigned and joined the Baloch side.

As of Sunday, there has been no official acknowledgement of these claims from the Government of Pakistan, nor have they been independently verified by major international news agencies. The authenticity of the statement remains unclear.

Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province by area, has experienced decades of insurgency and political unrest. Several separatist groups, including the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), have carried out attacks against Pakistani security forces and infrastructure, while Islamabad has maintained that it is conducting counterterrorism operations to restore stability in the province. Human rights organizations have also documented allegations of enforced disappearances and restrictions on civil liberties in the region, claims that Pakistani authorities have repeatedly denied.

The province has also witnessed periodic protests by civil society groups and families of missing persons, reflecting longstanding grievances over political representation, resource distribution and security operations. Pakistan maintains that Balochistan remains an integral part of the country and has accused militant groups of receiving external support, allegations that have been rejected by those accused.

If the claims of an independence declaration were to be substantiated, analysts say the development could have significant implications for South Asian geopolitics. Balochistan occupies a strategically important location bordering Iran and Afghanistan and hosts Pakistan's Gwadar Port, a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), one of the flagship projects under China's Belt and Road Initiative. Any prolonged instability in the province could raise concerns over the security of regional connectivity projects and foreign investments. 

For Pakistan, such a development would represent a major internal security and political challenge.
