Chief Advisor of the interim Government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, has left Dhaka for Bangkok to participate in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, a high-level meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

Yunus boarded a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 8:55 am on Thursday, as confirmed by the Chief Advisor’s Office. The summit, which runs from April 2 to April 4 in the Thai capital, brings together leaders from the seven-member regional bloc.

On Friday, he is set to meet with the heads of state and government of various attending nations. The summit holds particular significance for Bangladesh, as the country is set to assume the chairmanship of BIMSTEC.

Khalilur Rahman, the High Representative to the Chief Advisor on the Rohingya issue and other key matters, stated at a press briefing on Wednesday at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka that Bangladesh aims to enhance regional cooperation in a “pragmatic way” once it takes on the leadership role.
