Spain captured their second FIFA World Cup title with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina on Sunday, denying Lionel Messi a fairytale ending to his legendary international career.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres emerged as the match-winner, smashing home a powerful finish in the 106th minute after Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro's cross into his path. The goal sealed Spain's first World Cup triumph since 2010 and crowned an impressive tournament campaign.

Spain dominated much of the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, controlling possession and limiting Argentina to no shots on target throughout the 120 minutes. Despite Argentina's determined defending, La Roja finally found the breakthrough in extra time.

According to France 24, Argentina's frustration boiled over late in the match when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time of extra time following a dangerous challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí, leaving the South American side with 10 men as they chased an equaliser.

The final drew a crowd of 80,663 spectators, including US President Donald Trump, who attended alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Trump later joined Infantino in presenting the World Cup trophy to Spain captain Rodri, while Messi, playing what is widely expected to be his final World Cup match at the age of 39, was visibly emotional as he received the runners-up medal.

"This goal belongs to 47 million people not just me or the 26 players," Torres said after the match, dedicating the victory to the Spanish people. "When you're up against Messi, there's always a certain nervousness, but we believed in our football."

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente hailed his players after the historic triumph, saying the squad had achieved something extraordinary. "We have won everything, and that is wonderful. They are a generation of footballers who are a source of pride for Spain," he said.

The victory secures Spain's second World Cup crown, adding to their maiden title won in South Africa in 2010, while bringing a heartbreaking end to Argentina's title defence and Messi's remarkable World Cup journey.
