The nation is observing Victory Day on Tuesday(December 16) with extensive programmes across the country to honour the martyrs of the Liberation War and celebrate the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent nation.

Victory Day commemorates December 16, 1971, when Pakistani occupation forces surrendered after a nine-month-long war, paving the way for Bangladesh’s independence. The day began with a 31-gun salute in Dhaka, followed by nationwide observances.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid rich tributes to the Liberation War martyrs by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar in the early morning. He stood in solemn silence in remembrance of the fallen heroes, as a state salute was presented by members of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force. The Chief Justice, advisers of the interim government, service chiefs, freedom fighters, diplomats and senior officials were present.

As part of the celebrations, wreaths are being placed at memorials, national flags have been hoisted at government and private buildings, and key roads and intersections have been decorated. Various cultural and educational institutions are organising discussions, cultural programmes and Liberation War-based events.

The Armed Forces are conducting fly-past exercises at Tejgaon Old Airport, while paratroopers are carrying out a large-scale flag-bearing skydive to mark 55th years of independence. Victory fairs featuring local and indigenous crafts are being held in districts and upazilas across the country.

Bangladesh missions abroad are also organising programmes to highlight the significance of the day. The Bangladesh Postal Service is issuing a commemorative postage stamp, and religious institutions are arranging special prayers for peace and national progress.

Special meals are being served at orphanages, old age homes, hospitals, jails and government children’s homes. Children’s parks and museums have been opened to the public free of charge, and Liberation War-based films are being screened without ticket fees.

In separate messages, the President and the Chief Adviser recalled the sacrifices made during the Liberation War and urged citizens to work together to build a democratic, just and prosperous Bangladesh, extending greetings to Bangladeshis at home and abroad.
