Bangladesh has reaffirmed its strong commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, with a renewed focus on ensuring access to justice for women and girls at the global level.

Speaking at the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman said Bangladesh remains fully dedicated to advancing women’s rights through inclusive policies and international cooperation. He delivered the country’s national statement during the high-level session held at the United Nations headquarters.

According to BSS, the foreign minister stressed that access to justice for women and girls continues to be a central priority for Bangladesh, highlighting ongoing national efforts to strengthen legal frameworks and institutional support systems.

Dr Rahman reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and achieving the targets set under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He noted that these frameworks remain crucial in guiding national and global efforts toward gender equality.

He also drew attention to the active participation of Bangladeshi women in UN peacekeeping missions, describing their role as a testament to the country’s progress in promoting women’s leadership in global security initiatives.

Highlighting persistent challenges, the minister pointed to climate change, economic instability, conflicts and the digital divide as key obstacles disproportionately affecting women, particularly those in rural and vulnerable communities.

To address these issues, Bangladesh proposed strengthening justice systems by promoting women’s leadership and called for enhanced regional and international cooperation to combat human trafficking and systemic discrimination.

The ongoing session of the commission, taking place from March 9 to 19, is focused on improving access to justice, eliminating discriminatory laws and tackling structural barriers faced by women and girls worldwide.
