Bangladesh and the United States have reaffirmed a shared commitment to enhance cooperation with the Maldivian government, focusing on regional stability, combating human trafficking, and ensuring the welfare of migrant workers.

The pledge was made during a courtesy call on Monday (October 27) between Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives, Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam, and US Ambassador to the Maldives, Hugo Yon, in Male.

According to a message from the High Commission, the two diplomats engaged in "cordial and constructive discussions" aimed at strengthening trilateral cooperation among Bangladesh, the US, and the Maldives. They exchanged views on a wide range of mutual interests, including promoting peace, security, and prosperity throughout the Indian Ocean region.

A particular emphasis was placed on joint efforts to address critical human rights and labor issues. The ambassadors highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration with Maldivian authorities to combat human trafficking and to promote "safe, orderly, and regular labour migration."

Ensuring the welfare of the significant population of Bangladeshi expatriate workers in the island nation was a key point of the discussion.

Furthermore, the envoys explored prospects for joint capacity-building initiatives designed to align with the Maldives' national development goals. These initiatives would aim to foster inclusive economic growth and support human resource development in the country.

Both ambassadors expressed optimism, stating that continued cooperation among the three nations would further strengthen their shared objectives for a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
