The European Union has announced an additional €29 million in aid to respond to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Myanmar and support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and neighbouring countries.

According to an official EU report, €15 million will go towards humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, while €14 million will support development and resilience among Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.

The new funding comes as intensified fighting in Myanmar continues to displace thousands, further straining resources in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, where over 136,000 new refugees have arrived since January 2024. The aid will prioritise food, nutrition, and basic services such as health, water, and education, which have sharply deteriorated following the earthquake earlier this year.

The EU has so far provided nearly €50 million in humanitarian assistance for Myanmar and its regional impact, in addition to over €32 million already allocated to Bangladesh this year.
