The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) has expressed hope that Bangladesh’s upcoming national election, set for February 12, will be held in a free, fair, and peaceful manner, ensuring the participation of all citizens in a democratic environment.

During a press briefing at the Sylhet Press Club on Friday(February 6), Chief Observer Ivars Ijabs underscored the EU’s commitment to observing the electoral process with neutrality and professionalism. Press Club President Muktabis Un Nur and EU-EOM Press Officer Eberhard Laue were also present at the event.

Ijabs emphasized that the EU mission operates under the principles of independence, impartiality, and non-interference. He clarified that while the mission will closely monitor every phase of the election, it will not certify or validate the final results. According to BSS news, Ijabs reiterated the EU’s intention to promote transparency and confidence in the democratic process through objective observation.

About 200 observers including long-term observers covering all 64 districts, political analysts, diplomats, and a delegation from the European Parliament are participating in the mission. They will assess various aspects of the electoral environment, including the participation of women, young voters, and vulnerable communities, as well as the role of media and social media in shaping informed public opinion.

The EU-EOM began its operations in late December 2025, marking the first full-scale European Union observation mission in Bangladesh since 2008.
