A group of Indian nationals gathered in front of Bangladesh Bhaban, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, on Saturday night (20 December), shouting slogans and issuing threats against Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah.

According to a report by Jago News, the incident occurred between 8:30pm and 8:45pm, when several individuals arrived in three vehicles and stood outside the gate of the High Commission. They were heard chanting slogans in a mix of Hindi and Bengali, including “Hindus must be protected” and “Catch the High Commissioner.”

Bangladesh’s Press Minister in New Delhi, Md Faisal Mahmud, said the group moved closer to the main gate, continued shouting for a short while, and then left. “They didn’t throw anything or attempt to enter the premises,” he said.

When asked whether death threats were made against the High Commissioner, Mahmud said it was possible. He added that the individuals were heard saying, “If Hindus are killed there, we will kill all of you.” However, he clarified that the situation did not escalate to physical violence.

Following the incident, High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah convened an emergency meeting with officials from the Defence Wing of the High Commission. The Defense Wing later confirmed that the individuals had left the area shortly after the shouting and no further incident occurred.

The Bangladesh High Commission has reported the matter to the relevant authorities in India and is closely monitoring the situation.
