King Charles III has sent two books and a sealed letter to detained Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, according to photographs released by the country’s military government on Monday.

The books include Soil to Table by British gardeners Bridget Elworthy and Henrietta Courtauld, and Soil: The World at Our Feet, a catalogue of a London exhibition held last year.

According to the BBC, Suu Kyi, 81, has been detained since the military seized power in 2021. She was initially sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges widely criticised as politically motivated and was moved to house arrest in June.

The photographs showed Suu Kyi sitting across a table from two officials, but the authorities provided no details about her health or the contents of the letter.

A Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1991 for her non-violent struggle for democracy, Suu Kyi is known to have read extensively during her detention, particularly on religion and nature.

The latest development comes as military leader Min Aung Hlaing seeks to improve Myanmar’s international standing following his appointment as president after an election widely condemned as neither free nor fair.
