On the 22nd anniversary of the Parliament attack, a significant security breach occurred in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Two intruders leaped into the Lok Sabha from the visitors' gallery, prompting the suspension of proceedings and the evacuation of MPs from the chamber. Chaos ensued as the intruder, identified by a blue jacket, was discovered moving within the Lok Sabha. MPs and security personnel apprehended the individual, initiating an interrogation. As MPs exited the Lok Sabha, reports emerged that the intruders had released some form of gas.
During the incident, West Bengal BJP MP Khagen Murmu was addressing the Lok Sabha, leading to the adjournment of the proceedings. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram revealed that the intruders, approximately 20 years old, carried canisters emitting yellow smoke. One of them attempted to approach the Speaker's chair, shouting slogans. Karti Chidambaram expressed concern about the potential toxicity of the smoke and emphasized the seriousness of the security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack.
Despite the presence of guards at the visitors' gallery, the incident highlighted a major security lapse. Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav emphasized the need for visitors to carry identification tags, underscoring the government's responsibility to address such vulnerabilities. Trinamool leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay described the experience as alarming, questioning how the intruders entered with smoke-emitting instruments.
The gravity of the situation was echoed by Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who labeled it a security breach, especially poignant on the day commemorating the sacrifices made during the 2001 Parliament attack. The House was adjourned until 2 pm in response to the incident.
