The Maldives government has officially ended the prohibition on recruiting unskilled workers from Bangladesh, providing new employment prospects for Bangladeshi nationals in the country. The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology in the Maldives announced the lifting of the ban in a statement issued on Sunday (17 December).
Counsellor (Labour) and Head of the Embassy of Bangladesh High Commission in Maldives Md Sohel Parvez said the decision to reopen the labour market for Bangladeshis in the Maldives is very favorable. He mentioned that the mission would share further details at a later date, ensuring that all procedures adhere to established regulations.
Parvez emphasized that the introduction of new visas would accompany the initiative, and efforts would be made to legalize the status of undocumented workers. Employers interested in hiring Bangladeshi workers through the expatriate system can apply for work permits. He cautioned against relying on brokers and stressed the importance of awareness regarding visa matters.
The ban on recruiting unskilled workers from Bangladesh was initially implemented in September 2019. Despite initial indications that the ban would last for a year, it was subsequently extended. The recent decision to lift the ban signals a positive development in labor relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh.
