Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Moscow on Monday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the two countries seek to further strengthen their political, defense and economic cooperation.

The Kremlin said the leaders are expected to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation across several sectors, alongside international and regional developments. A number of bilateral agreements are also expected to be signed during the visit.

According to Anadolu Ajansi, Putin and Min Aung Hlaing have met several times in recent years, including during the Myanmar leader’s visit to the Kremlin in March 2025.

Russia has maintained close relations with Myanmar since the military seized power in 2021. Moscow has emerged as a key political and defense partner for Myanmar, while the two sides have also pursued cooperation in energy, infrastructure and nuclear-related projects.

Min Aung Hlaing made three visits to Russia last year. He met Putin in March, attended a military parade in Moscow in May marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, and traveled to Russia again in September to attend a World Atomic Week forum.

The latest meeting comes as both governments seek to expand bilateral ties amid continued political and security challenges in Myanmar and growing geopolitical competition in Southeast Asia.
