A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck northwestern Myanmar late Wednesday night (February 25), sending tremors across several parts of Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka.

The quake hit at 10:51:49pm Bangladesh time, according to the Earthquake Observation Centre of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Meteorologist Farzana Sultana said the tremors were felt in multiple districts, with relatively stronger shaking reported in Cox’s Bazar and adjoining areas.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the epicenter was located in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, about 112 kilometers north-northwest of Monywa and around 75 kilometers southeast of Mawlaik. The quake originated at a moderate depth, which allowed the tremors to be felt across borders.

According to Daily Observer, residents in Dhaka and other parts of the country briefly rushed out of homes and offices as buildings swayed for several seconds. However, no immediate reports of casualties or major damage were received from either Myanmar or Bangladesh at the time of filing this report.

Myanmar lies along a seismically active belt and frequently experiences earthquakes, some of which are felt in neighboring Bangladesh due to geographical proximity. Authorities in both countries are monitoring the situation.
