Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained 107 Rohingyas, including women and children, for leaving their camps without authorization and later sent them back to refugee settlements in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.

According to a press release issued early Thursday, Lt Col Ashikur Rahman, commander of BGB’s Teknaf-2 Battalion, said the Rohingyas were detained during a day-long operation at the Damdamiya checkpost along the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf road.

“Recently, the number of Rohingyas roaming outside the camps has increased. BGB has received information that some are involved in criminal activities outside the camps, contributing to a deterioration of law and order in the border region,” Lt Col Ashikur said in the statement.

In response, the BGB intensified patrols and raids across multiple checkpoints in Teknaf. During Thursday’s operation, 107 Rohingyas travelling in various vehicles without permission were detained, he added.

Of those held, 61 were men, 28 women, and 18 children. They were reportedly travelling to visit relatives or for personal reasons in different areas of Teknaf.

The detained Rohingyas, residents of various camps in Teknaf and Ukhiya, were later handed over to their respective majhis (camp leaders) after signing a bond, according to BGB officials.
