Sri Lanka has officially entered the public phase of 5G mobile connectivity with the commercial launch of 5G services by the country's two leading telecommunications providers, Dialog Axiata PLC and Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel (SLT-Mobitel).

SLT-Mobitel inaugurated its 5G service on Friday at One Galle Face Mall in Colombo, showcasing a range of advanced applications including high-speed internet access, low-latency connectivity, real-time gaming, as well as augmented and virtual reality experiences. Mothilal De Silva, Chairman of the SLT Group, highlighted that 5G technology will enable faster data transmission and foster wider adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud-based services.

According to Xinhua News, the introduction of 5G connectivity is expected to significantly boost Sri Lanka's digital economy by improving infrastructure and expanding access to innovative digital solutions.

Dialog Axiata PLC announced the commercial launch of its Dialog 5G Ultra network on Thursday, powered by over 220 live 5G sites and currently serving more than 1.5 million subscribers nationwide. Supun Weerasinghe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Dialog Axiata PLC, described the launch as a “defining step” toward strengthening Sri Lanka’s digital infrastructure. He emphasized that 5G is a critical enabler for innovation, productivity, and digital inclusion across the country.

With both major operators now delivering 5G services, Sri Lanka is poised to accelerate its transformation into a digitally advanced nation, tapping into new economic opportunities and technological advancements.
