Vietnam’s top leader To Lam has been reappointed as the General Secretary of the Communist Party for another five-year term, following a unanimous vote by the party’s new 180-member central committee. The decision, announced at the close of the party’s five-yearly congress, cements Lam’s position as the most powerful figure in the one-party state.

Lam, who has built a reputation as a pragmatic reformist, pledged to steer the export-driven nation toward sustained, high-speed growth. In his post-election remarks, he called for a governance system built on integrity, talent, courage, and competence, stressing that officials will be judged by performance and measurable results. According to Reuters, Lam had earlier promised to deliver two-digit economic growth, signaling an ambitious push to modernize Vietnam’s industrial base and expand its global trade footprint.

The Communist Party also adopted a sweeping resolution targeting at least 10 percent annual growth through the decade, alongside the appointment of 19 members to the Politburo, the country’s top decision-making body. Lam heads the list, followed by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, veteran party figure Tran Cam Tu, and former central bank governor Le Minh Hung, who is widely viewed as a contender for the prime ministerial post.

Defence Minister Phan Van Giang, often considered the country’s second-most powerful leader, also secured a position in the new Politburo. However, incumbent Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Luong Cuong were notably absent from the final lineup marking a potential shift in Vietnam’s internal power dynamics as Lam consolidates authority for the years ahead.
