António Guterres has reaffirmed the United Nations’ unwavering support and solidarity with Bangladesh during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at the UN Headquarters.

During the meeting held on Thursday, the UN chief extended warm congratulations to the newly formed government of Bangladesh and praised the country’s continued humanitarian leadership, particularly its generosity in sheltering forcibly displaced Rohingya people. He noted that Bangladesh’s role has been widely recognised by the international community as a significant humanitarian contribution.

The two sides discussed a range of contemporary global issues, including challenges faced by developing and vulnerable countries amid the ongoing global oil crisis. Dr Rahman highlighted the disproportionate impact of the crisis on poorer nations and stressed the need for enhanced global cooperation to mitigate economic pressures and ensure sustainable recovery.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Nations in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development priorities. The discussions also touched on collaborative efforts in climate action, humanitarian response, and economic resilience for developing nations.

On behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the foreign minister extended an invitation to the UN Secretary-General to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time. Guterres welcomed the invitation and expressed appreciation, underscoring his willingness to further deepen engagement with Bangladesh.
