Vietnam has reaffirmed its support for continued ASEAN engagement with Myanmar, stressing that the bloc's Five-Point Consensus remains the key framework for helping the conflict-hit country pursue peace, stability and national reconciliation.

Speaking at an informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers and Myanmar's foreign minister in Bangkok on Sunday, Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung said Vietnam continues to regard Myanmar as a full member of ASEAN and supports practical, sustained dialogue to advance the implementation of the regional bloc's peace plan.

According to Asia News Network, Trung acknowledged Myanmar's recent efforts to stabilise its political situation, revive the economy, strengthen governance, combat transnational crimes including drug trafficking and cybercrime—and improve border security. He expressed hope that these measures would contribute to lasting peace, national reconciliation and better living conditions for the people.

The Vietnamese minister urged ASEAN to maintain regular and direct engagement with Myanmar to better understand developments on the ground and facilitate tangible progress. He also reaffirmed Vietnam's readiness to work with the Philippines, the 2026 ASEAN Chair, and other member states to support Myanmar's economic recovery, social development and regional cooperation.

The Bangkok meeting marked the highest-level direct engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar's administration since 2021 and the first in-person gathering attended by many ASEAN foreign ministers. During the discussions, Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe briefed participants on a 100-day plan aimed at promoting peace, reconciliation and stability.

ASEAN foreign ministers reiterated their commitment to supporting a Myanmar-led solution through the effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus while continuing dialogue with the country's authorities to promote peace, security and sustainable development across the region.
