Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday condemned the attack on former US President Donald Trump at an election rally.

She expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it extremely unfortunate for a democratic country like the United States.

The prime minister questioned how such an attack on a presidential candidate and a former president of America could take place in a civilized and democratic country like America.

"This incident is really regretful."

She made the remarks when her attention was drawn to the shooting of American presidential candidate Donald Trump during a press conference arranged to brief the media about the outcome of her recently concluded three-day bilateral visit to China from July 8-10.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud stated that Bangladesh strongly condemned the attack.

Donald Trump was hit in the ear in an apparent assassination attempt by a gunman at a campaign rally on Saturday, in a chaotic and shocking incident that will fuel fears of instability ahead of the 2024 US presidential election.

The 78-year-old former president was rushed off stage with blood smeared across his face after the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, while the gunman and a bystander were killed and two spectators critically injured.
