Brazil, the current president of the BRICS bloc, has formally announced Indonesia’s inclusion as a full member. The decision, reached by consensus among member states, reflects an ongoing commitment to expanding the group's influence, initially outlined at the 2023 BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. Indonesia now joins Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and recently added members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in this influential coalition of emerging economies.
Indonesia’s foreign ministry welcomed the announcement, calling BRICS membership a "strategic way to increase collaboration and partnership with other developing nations." Echoing this sentiment, Brazil highlighted the shared goals of reforming global governance institutions and deepening cooperation in the Global South, further positioning BRICS as a platform for addressing economic imbalances and promoting equitable growth.
One of BRICS' key objectives is the "development of means of payment" to enhance trade among member nations. At the most recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in November 2024, discussions focused on reducing reliance on the US dollar in international transactions and strengthening local currencies. This push towards non-dollar transactions has drawn criticism from the United States, with President-elect Donald Trump threatening 100% tariffs on BRICS nations if they undercut the US dollar.
Indonesia’s inclusion is poised to bolster regional and global South cooperation. As Southeast Asia’s largest economy, Indonesia’s participation brings added diversity and economic strength to BRICS, creating opportunities for increased intra-bloc trade and investment. By working together to address challenges unique to developing nations, BRICS members are fostering a stronger, more unified Global South capable of influencing the global economic and political landscape.
This expansion underscores BRICS' commitment to inclusivity and its role as a voice for emerging economies in shaping a multipolar world order.
