Iran launched a significant strike against Israel late on Saturday, employing explosive drones and missiles in its first direct attack on Israeli territory. The retaliatory assault, which resulted in a 7-year-old girl being critically injured, has escalated tensions in the region, prompting fears of a broader conflict. The US has reiterated its unwavering support for Israel, with President Biden promising "ironclad" backing.

According to Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Iran launched dozens of ground-to-ground missiles, most of which were intercepted outside Israeli borders. The attack included over 10 cruise missiles and more than 300 drones and missiles in total, causing light damage to an Israeli military facility.

The Iranian strike follows a vow of retaliation for what Iran claims was an Israeli attack on its Damascus consulate earlier in April, which resulted in the deaths of seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. While Israel neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the consulate attack, tensions have been high between the two nations.

In response to Iran's aggression, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm over the escalating situation, emphasizing the risk of a devastating region-wide escalation. The UN Security Council convened to discuss Israel's request to condemn Iran's attack and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.

President Biden, who had warned Iran against such actions just a day before, cut short a weekend visit to address the situation, reaffirming the US commitment to Israel's security. Meanwhile, Israel has closed its airspace, and neighboring countries like Lebanon and Jordan have heightened their defences.

The conflict threatens to draw in other regional players, with reports of drones launched against Israel by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group. While Israel and Iran have historically engaged through proxies or targeting each other's forces in third countries, the recent direct attack signals a dangerous escalation in hostilities.

As tensions continue to mount, the international community, including the European Union and several nations, has condemned Iran's actions. However, the situation remains fluid, with the potential for further escalation and broader implications for regional stability.
