As many as 65 individuals from Myanmar's tribal communities crossed into Bangladesh illegally through the Baishfari border in Ghumdhum union, Bandarban's Naikhongchhari upazila early on Saturday (18 November).

The group, comprising members of the Chakma and Tanchangya communities, is now gathered near the Hindu Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar's Kutupalong. It was confirmed by Zarin Tasnim, acting upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and assistant commissioner (land) of Ukhiya.

“The incident has been reported to higher authorities, and a decision regarding their status will be made later,” she said.

The migrants cited escalating violence and worsening conditions in Myanmar's Rakhine State as the reason for their flight. Many were involved in farming and shifting cultivation (jhum) in Myanmar but said the conflict had made survival impossible.

Security for the group is currently being provided by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local police. Discussions between the upazila administration. BGB are ongoing to determine further steps, said Mohammad Arif Hossain, officer-in-charge of Ukhiya Police Station.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Mashruki, commander of BGB's 34th Battalion, acknowledged the infiltration and said efforts are underway to collect detailed information. “The exact number of individuals will be confirmed soon,” he added.

The government’s response to the situation is awaited.
