ASEAN leaders are jointly championing ecotourism as a pivotal element in the industry, aiming to attract both domestic and international travelers. This initiative comes as the tourism sector steadily recovers from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the goal of offering visitors unique recreational experiences immersed in nature and community-based travel. Cambodia is making significant strides in promoting ecotourism, aligning with regional efforts to rejuvenate and enhance tourism experiences.
At the 27th Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers (M-ATM) in Vientiane, the ministers approved the draft ASEAN Ecotourism Standard, set to be adopted at the upcoming 44th ASEAN Summit. They also endorsed the Action Roadmap for Sustainable Tourism Development in ASEAN. Cambodia, internationally recognized for its contributions to eco- and community-based tourism within the ASEAN framework, is actively participating in these regional efforts.
Minister Thong Khon highlighted Cambodia's abundant natural and ecotourism potential, from coastal areas and the Cardamom Mountains to Tonle Sap Lake and the northeastern region with rare dolphins. The government's Public-Private-People Partnership (4P) development model aims to empower local communities, maximize grassroots benefits, and alleviate poverty.
In the post-pandemic context, ecotourism is emerging as a new attraction for travelers eager to explore new destinations and connect with nature. Sar Sarin, vice-president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), sees an opportunity for collaboration with ASEAN on the Ecotourism Standard. This standard ensures comfort, safety, and cleanliness for tourists, fostering a common framework for promoting ecotourism across ASEAN member countries.
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Dith Tina, emphasizes the crucial role of the agricultural sector in driving tourism development, particularly in eco- and community-based segments. Developing ecotourism not only creates jobs but also stimulates rural economies and builds livelihoods, aligning with Cambodia's commitment to sustainable ecotourism and broader ASEAN efforts to protect natural resources and empower local communities.
