Bangladesh is gearing up to host an international conference on the Rohingya crisis, tentatively scheduled for September or October next year. The venue and logistical arrangements are expected to be finalized by March or April, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, where Shafiqul Alam responded to questions from journalists.
When asked about strategic preparations along Bangladesh’s 270-kilometer border with Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Alam stated that the situation is being closely monitored. He added that the Chief Adviser has appointed a high-ranking representative to oversee and engage with stakeholders regarding the Rohingya issue.
“One of our major initiatives for next year will be to organize a large international conference on the Rohingya crisis. We aim to finalize its venue and other arrangements by March or April,” Alam said.
He expressed optimism that the conference, planned for September or October, will attract participation from key international stakeholders, including representatives from the United Nations, European Union, United States, India, China, and other nations with vested interests in resolving the crisis.
Alam also noted that the Chief Adviser had shared this initiative during his participation in a recent UN conference, signaling Bangladesh’s commitment to garnering global attention and action on the Rohingya issue.
The planned conference is expected to be a pivotal moment in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by nearly 1.2 million Rohingyas residing in Bangladesh.
