Bangladesh’s foreign affairs adviser, Md Touhid Hossain, firmly reiterated the government's stance on not accepting any more Rohingya refugees amid the ongoing violence in Myanmar.

“We’ve made it crystal clear—we’re not in a position to take in even one more Rohingya,” Hossain stated on Sunday, responding to questions about the influx of over 12,000 Rohingyas and an estimated 50,000 more waiting at the border.

He admitted, however, that despite efforts to secure the border, some Rohingyas are still slipping through. “Yes, some are getting in. We know that. But we're doing everything we can to stop them. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is turning back those we catch, day in, day out,” Hossain explained.

Still, he acknowledged the limitations in fully securing the border. "It’s a vast area—of course, we can’t catch everyone. There are gaps in our capacity. But wherever possible, we’re sending them back.”

Hossain also took a firm stance against international pressure, particularly from the UNHCR. "They want us to open our borders, but we’ve already taken in 1.2 million Rohingyas. We’ve gone above and beyond. If they’re so concerned, maybe they should offer to take them in instead."

A meeting with the BGB chief was held to discuss the situation further, Hossain added, promising more in-depth discussions on the issue in the coming days.
